Guest Reviews for Whitelady House

Left by our past guests

It was a perfect holiday for all the family plus dog

The house is in a quiet area perfect for all the family, children loved playing in the garden and games room, lots of outside space for our dog Poppy. The house is spacious and very well set out so each room was used by all of us. We enjoyed our BBQs outside. We visited Lydford Gorge which was next door to the house, the children loved walking through the woods and then going for a welly boot paddle in the river.

Just What We Needed After Lockdown!

We had such a lovely stay at the Whitelady! The house was spotless upon arrival, and Carol, the owner, was generous in allowing us to check in early.

In addition to responding to my emails in a timely manner leading up to our stay, she also dropped by shortly after arrival to answer any additional questions and show us where a few things were.

The gardens were gorgeous, and we spent most of our time sitting outside and enjoying a drink (or a competitive game of croquet!). The house didn’t lack for anything…the kitchen was well stocked, there was plenty of firewood, games/puzzles, and information on local attractions, pubs, events, etc. In addition to the amenities, the house is absolutely stunning. The rooms were well fitted with solid, comfortable furniture and decorated beautifully. We have stayed in a few large houses in this area, and this was by far our favourite stay so far!

Fantastic cottage and lovely service

Our first trip since lockdown and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. A lovely cottage which was larger than expected with very generous bedrooms.

The addition of a downstairs en suite bedroom is great as well particularly I imagine if a guest has problems with the stairs. The kitchen is extremely well equipped and cooking with an AGA is always great. The grounds are lovely, the hot tub a nice little bonus and the location is great for walking etc although for some of the more touristy places you do still need to book in advance. There’s plenty of Tors to scale though as well as plenty of pubs now open to have a meal afterwards – all of which are taking sensible precautions.

The owner is lovely and made sure all was in order for us which was great in these more difficult times. The flapjack gift pack was amazing but I suspect I’ll be working it off for weeks. Oh and we availed ourselves of the recommended private chef one night (Harrie from Boo to a Goose) and we were treated to an outstanding meal from two lovely hosts who sorted everything.

I’d definitely recommend having the night off and getting Harrie to cook! All in all highly recommended and we wish the owners all the best as they start having people stay again.

“I stayed at Whitelady house back in November with my family to celebrate my fathers 70th birthday. He had had a particularly bad year with health complaints so we wanted to throw him a really good surprise birthday weekend. It couldn’t have been more successful. Everything from booking the property to checking out on the last day was seamless and perfectly organised. The house itself exceptionally comfortable, clean and beautifully presented. A real treat to stay here for the weekend. We ordered some food for the weekend too which was delicious, particularly the lemon meringue pie! Carol so kindly left us some delicious flap jacks and a pot of tea for when we arrived as well which I thought was a really lovely touch. I can’t fault Whitelady house in anyway. It really was the perfect weekend and I can highly recommend it. I’ll most definitely be back.”

“We arrived to a fabulous greeting by Carol who showed us around the delightful whitelady house and homemade cakes! We are a group who annually holiday together and whitelady house not only measured up to passed trips to luxury houses but surpassed all expectations.

We walked from the house to whitelady waterfall in the gorge and were all wowed by its majesty. Took a trip into Tavistock, a ten minute drive away, and enjoyed the moors. The house had a splendid kitchen with enough space for all to enjoy, a lovely hottub, a few steps from the frenchdoors outside the downstairs twin bedroom and even table tennis in the barn opposite. The house deserves five stars for luxury and comfort and we promise to be back!”

The Wall’s Family

“What a truly beautiful place Whitelady House is, we are a family with 3 generations and children ranging from 2 to 14 and the house accommodated us comfortably. We have loved the warmth of the kitchen, the opulence of the dining room and the comfort of the drawing room. But the favourite place of our family is the garden. Hide and seek, relaxing with a beer, frisbee throwing, football or quoits you can play them all. Would we stay again – without doubt, a wonderful week spent in a wonderful place – Thank you xxx”

“What an amazing house! Carol was such an accommodating hostess – with beautifully baked cakes and a superb dinner. Also very helpful with lots of local info on pubs to eat at and things to see and do – we managed a run on Dartmoor and another run/climb in the gorge – will have to save the cycle for next time. “

Whitelady house is a wonderful , welcoming home , very relaxing with every thing one could ask for even down to the extras you would find in a hotel ! Shower caps too !!

Plenty of outside space for little children to run around and play , with Table tennis for the older ones and croquet too.

Fantastic house! We went with our extended family for 5 days to celebrate our 50th Birthdays and it couldn’t have been better. The house is beautifully decorated, very comfortable and extremely well-equipped, for whatever you want to do!

It is so handy for the beautiful Lydford Gorge & for the moors that you really don’t need to take the car out, and with the croquet, table tennis, Wii, loads of games, we easily amused ourselves when we weren’t out and about. And for relaxation there’s the lovely hot tub.

We had a catered birthday celebration meal which was superb. It was overall definitely a place at which good memories are made, and we are all trying to think of an excuse to return! Oh, and mustn’t forget the yummy cakes left for us on our arrival – we weren’t expecting that as we were self-catering, a lovely touch.

My family and I visited White Lady House for a special 60th Birthday celebration.

The house is truly beautiful and exceeded all expectations. The interior is decorated to perfection, yet maintains a homely feel and the grounds are perfectly maintained.

The house has many beautiful walks on it’s doorstep and catered perfectly for a large family ranging from 6 to 64!

Carol kindly catered for the adults on the Saturday evening and the food and service were both impeccable. We were thoroughly looked after throughout the evening and came down to a spotless kitchen the next morning.

We cannot thank Carol enough for providing such a wonderful house for a very special and memorable weekend.

I was looking for somewhere special to stay with some friends to celebrate my 40th and this beautiful house was spot on! I researched many places, but this was the one that I kept coming back to. We had fantastic communication with the owner (nothing was ever a bother and they were willing to help us make plans / arrange activities etc), a lovely warm welcome on our arrival (delicious homemade cakes, tea / coffee, champagne in the fridge) – what more could we want?

Each and every room was beautifully decorated, the house was just stunning! We were a party of 10, 5 couples, diplomatically, we put the couples names in a hat to decide rooms, and I don’t think any of us were disappointed! All the rooms are spacious – having viewed pictures on-line I was surprised that the room were BIGGER than I thought!

The entire house is very well equipped – from an entertainment point of view (wii, board games, tv, ipod docking station, books) right through to catering (large american fridge/freezer, hobs, aga, normal oven, steam oven, a large selection of cook books).

There was an option to be catered for, which if we have the opportunity to return again, we may well consider!

The location is fabulous, nicely tucked away – perfect for our weekend retreat! We did walk down to the Falls, however, with the time of year, quite rightly we could not venture all around the National Trust walk. I would love to return to this gorgeous house at some point in the future – perfect for any time of year, no matter what the weather – I could go on and on about how wonderful it is – but really I’d like to keep it a hidden gem!

Lovely house! I’m desperately trying to think up an excuse to go there again. Ticks all the boxes: spacious, comfortable and beautifully decorated; excellent location (very quiet, and only a few minutes’ walk from Dartmoor, but also within easy reach of Tavistock). The house itself is well laid out, with plenty of space for wet & muddy boots & coats as well as two comfortable sitting rooms (well away from the muddy coats). Fabulous kitchen: generously equipped in terms of ovens etc. (two fridges, an Aga, an ordinary oven, a steam oven….); store cupboard with plenty of basics (very rare on a self-catering rental, I’ve found); plus a collection of good cookery books. The dining room has a beautiful polished wooden table and a candelabra.

I’ve stayed there twice now. The first time we were fully self-catering, yet on arrival we found three homemade cakes waiting to greet us in the dining room, and some local cheeses in the fridge. The second time we took the semi-catered option: the owner provided us with three dishes (each serving 12) to heat and serve. All three were delicious, reasonably priced and very generous in portion size. On learning that I was trying to choose gluten-free options to accommodate one of our party, a separate single portion gluten-free meal was offered and provided at no extra cost, allowing the rest of us to enjoy a traditional chicken pie. (We still got the cakes on arrival, too.)

The owner is generally extremely helpful and accommodating and will do what she can to make your stay enjoyable. Possibly best of all, there was none of that “how much cleaning do you think we should we do before we leave?” anxiety. Cleaners come in as soon as you go; you can just walk out as if it were a hotel. Fabulous!

It was worth every penny. The children found plenty to occupy them (including a table-tennis table), the adults found it very comfortable and the kitchen made cooking a joy. Very highly recommended.

Oddly

Whitelady is a really beautiful property in a fantastic location with good access to Dartmoor. Although a very high spec house it very homely and comfortable, with added extra’s including a hot tub. We found it very useful that we could get a bus into Tavistock from nearby. We have stayed here more than once found the location very peaceful with very nice pub serving good food in Lydford. We would definately go again.

Happy Guest

We spent a lovely 5 days at WhiteLady House celebrating birthdays and having all of the family together. It was a perfect setting, providing plenty of space for the 11 of us staying and for others to pop in to see us. There was lots to do for all ages and interests – visiting local sites and towns, walking on Dartmoor and along Lydford Gorge, and relaxing in the hot tub or in the garden.

We had a lovely catered birthday dinner for 14 which was arranged for us by Carol (the owner of the house) which was a perfect treat! Would definitely recommend.

Fantastic house. Beautiful surroundings. Very comfortable. Spotlessly clean. The rooms were all very large. The outside space great for children. Can’t wait to go back.

My girlfriends organised a surprise birthday party for me at Whitelady. The house is magnificent, but manages to still exude a friendly and comfortable home atmosphere. The bedrooms are stunning as is the fabulous dining room together with two gorgeous lounges. Carol the owner did all our shopping and cooked our evening meals, they were yummy. The surrounding countryside is spectacular and we loved our visit to Lydford Gorge. All in all a memorable stay and for all the right reasons. Fabulous venue, amazing countryside, great shopping in the market town of Tavistock and a warm, welcoming fantastic cook in the owner.
